Pedestrian critically injured when struck by vehicle in Ceres
A 33-year-old man was critically injured Sunday night when struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a road in Ceres, according to the Ceres Police Department.
The collision was reported around 8:08 p.m. March 1 on Mitchell Road at the signalized entrance to the east Walmart parking lot, just north of the Service Road intersection.
Officers responding to multiple 911 calls arrived within minutes and found the injured pedestrian lying in the roadway with major injuries, police said. Officers provided lifesaving medical aid until Modesto Fire Department personnel and paramedics arrived and took over advanced medical care.
The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition, police said.
Because of the severity of the crash, the department’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and took over the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate the driver was traveling north on Mitchell with a green traffic signal at the east Walmart parking lot entrance when the vehicle struck the pedestrian, who was attempting to cross the road, police said.
Investigators said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the collision.
The northbound lanes of Mitchell Road were closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene, and traffic was diverted during that time.
The collision remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact Officer Krandall Vandagriff at 209-538-5678 or krandall.vandagriff@ci.ceres.ca.us.
