Modesto fire crew replaces what a crash took away from a child
When a motorcycle crash sent a rider careening onto a Modesto sidewalk last week, a nearby family managed to pull its children out of the way just in time.
The collision occurred near Fifth and I streets, where a motorcycle and vehicle collided, sending the motorcyclist off course and onto the sidewalk — directly toward a family out for a walk. The motorcycle struck and destroyed a scooter one of the children had been riding — but the adults’ quick action avoided what could have been a devastating impact.
The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. The family declined medical care at the scene.
What happened next, however, turned a frightening night into a touching one.
After responding to the crash Thursday, firefighters from Modesto Fire Department noticed the damage to the child’s scooter. The crew later went out to buy a new scooter and helmet for the child, returning to the family’s home that same night to deliver them.
“We’re an all-risk fire department that responds to all types of emergencies,” said MFD spokesman Capt. Joe Spani. “We tend to see people during some very difficult life experiences — car accidents, house fires, life-threatening medical events. Being able to make things better like this and put smiles on a family’s faces is extremely uplifting for us as firefighters.”
