Culinary showdown

Three of Modesto's favorite chefs -- Marco Alvarado of Bacchus Food & Spirits, Scott Pasco of Clayton's Restaurant and Vincent Alvarado of Dewz Restaurant -- will face off in the Culinary Clash at the Modesto Centre Plaza on Thursday. Each chef must create four delectable dishes using a "secret ingredient." Proceeds from the event will benefit the DMC Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides health education programs and health-related services. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and guests can taste food and beverages from local purveyors before the competition. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. They can be purchased by calling the DMC Foundation at 527-3412, at the foundation's office at 730 McHenry Ave. in Modesto, or online at www.dmcf.org.

Yesteryears

75 YEARS AGO: A resolution urging members of the Hughson Woman's Christian Temperance Union to boycott "all stores, groceries, restaurants, hotels, drug stores and other places of business that engaged in the sale or giving away of intoxicating liquor" was unanimously adopted.

50 YEARS AGO: Two of three Turlock elementary schools reopened after being closed for a day because of flooding. Central and Washington schools resumed classes, while Mt. View School remained closed. Mt. View couldn't reopen because it was being used as headquarters for civil defense flood operations.
