GARDEN CLUB TO MEET: Annie Joseph, California nursery professional, will be the featured speaker for the Modesto Garden Club's January meeting Thursday from 12 to 1:45 p.m. Her topic will be "Switching to Natural Gardening." The "Snack and Learn" session will feature Kathi Westfall demonstrating "Art for the Garden" from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. The meetings are held at the Modesto Senior Center, 211 Bodem St.
NICE DAY FOR A SWIM: The city's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department is accepting registrations for spring swim lessons. Levels 1, 2, private, and adult and child classes are available. Swim lessons begin Jan. 14 and continue through Feb. 11. BRUSH UP ON YOUR DRIVING SKILLS: Drivers 50 and older can refresh their driving skills at the next AARP driver safety program on Jan. 16 and 17. Both sessions will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Heritage Oak Conference Room at the Oak Valley Medical Plaza building, 1425 W. H St., at Ash Street. The cost is $10 per person. During the two-part class, participants will learn about age-related changes that can affect driving ability. Participants must attend both sessions to earn a certificate of completion. Upon completion, some participants may qualify for an auto insurance premium reduction. Oak Valley Hospital offers this class and others to promote health and well-being.
