Dog adoption fees waived for limited time at Stanislaus animal shelter
With over 200 dogs “in all shapes and sizes” at the Stanislaus Animal Services Agency, anyone can find a new best friend — and for a limited time, at no cost.
“We have dogs that would be great for the person who loves to hike and be adventurous,” said Executive Director Vaughn Maurice. “We also have plenty of senior citizen dogs who would love nothing more than to cuddle up with you on the couch while you watch a movie and help you eat your popcorn.”
Adoption fees of $120 have been prepaid for about 70 of those dogs (as of Wednesday morning) thanks to the generous donations from two community members that total $11,000. All the dogs are microchipped, vaccinated and spayed or neutered.
One of the donors asked that the funds be used specifically for the 50 dogs that have been at the shelter the longest. Those dogs have been waiting for forever homes for more than two weeks and in some cases almost two months, Maurice said.
The shelter is currently over its capacity of 183 dogs and Maurice is eager to make room for more. “At any given moment, we could have an animal officer go pick up 15 more dogs.”
The shelter also has about 20 cats available with adoption fees of $50.
And for those “commitment-phobes,” Maurice said the shelter always is looking for people willing to foster animals. He said foster families usually house animals for a few weeks to a few months.
The shelter is open from 1 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday; and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter is at 3647 Cornucopia Way in Modesto.
The free adoptions will last until every dollar donated is spent, which Maurice expects will be about a week. To view available dogs online, visit the shelter website at www.stanislausanimalservices.com.
