A Modesto man struck a tree with enough force early Monday to knock it down and total his car, but he avoided serious injury, the Modesto police and fire departments report.

Driver Andrew Melendez, 30, faces charges of driving under the influence.

The report of the crash was made shortly before 12:30 a.m. Monday. Melendez had been driving west on West Orangeburg Avenue in a 2005 Nissan when he struck the tree, MPD spokeswoman Sharon Bear said.

The crash was on the 1900 block of Orangeburg, just east of Highway 99, where there’s a bend in the road.

Melendez was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment and was cited for DUI, she said. He appears to have been alone in the car.
