Why did Lake Tahoe make the top of the list?

Taking the first spot as the best lake for anglers is Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe offers fishing year-round which makes it an amazing spot for anglers no matter what fish they are looking for.

Lake Tahoe is the largest freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada and the largest alpine lake in North America, according to Keep Tahoe Blue.

“Set against the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe combines iconic scenery with a fishery that consistently produces impressive trout,” according to FishingBooker. “The lake is especially known for its trophy mackinaw (Lake trout), which grow to remarkable sizes in Tahoe’s deep, cold waters.”

What other lakes made the list?

FishBooker searched throughout the nation for the best lakes for anglers and came up with this ranking that includes waters in Colorado and the beautiful environment of Idaho.

  1. Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada
  2. Flathead Lake, Montana
  3. Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Utah and Wyoming
  4. Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho
  5. Pyramid Lake, Nevada
  6. Lake Dillon, Colorado
  7. Henry’s Lake, Idaho
  8. Torch Lake, Michigan
  9. Lake Jocassee, South Carolina
  10. Priest Lake, Idaho

When is the best time for spring anglers in Lake Tahoe?

Anglers are encouraged to start heading to the lake in April. Cooler water temperatures keep Mackinaw trout active and closer to the surface, making it easier for reeling them in, according to Tahoe Sport Fishing.

Spring and early summer are among the best times to target Mackinaw as well as rainbow and brown trout.

Anglers can also enjoy catching Kokanee salmon. The ranking said Lake Tahoe’s variety of fish makes it “one of the most diverse cold-water fisheries in the region.” Spring fishing allows anglers of all levels the opportunity to spot and catch fish with ease, according to FishTahoe.

As the water temperatures climb, the ice thaws and spring fishing offers some of the year’s most versatile angling opportunities.
