The state offers programs to help elderly and lower-income Californians prepare their taxes. Here’s what to know:

What is Volunteer Income Tax Assistance?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free help filling out your forms, advice on what to do if you owe money and assistance figuring out if you qualify for the California Earned Income Tax Credit.

You must earn less than $69,000 a year, have a disability, speak limited English or be active-duty or retired military personnel or their dependent to qualify.

What is Tax Counseling for the Elderly?

Tax Counseling for the Elderly also offers provides free help filling out your forms, advice on what to do if you owe money and assistance figuring out if you qualify for the California Earned Income Tax Credit.

You must be at least 60 years of age to qualify.

How do I access these programs?

California offers in-person help with both programs at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance centers from February through May.

When do I have to file my 2025 tax return?

In California, the deadline to file both state and federal income tax returns for the 2025 tax year is Wednesday, April 15.

Taxpayers who need more time can request a six-month filing extension — but any taxes owed must still be paid by the April deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
