You could save up to $175 on your California electricity bill. Here’s how
Millions of California residents can save up to $175 on their October electricity bills as part of the California Climate Credit program, the California Public Utilities Commission announced.
This credit aims to provide financial relief for customers of Pacific Gas & Electric and other investor-owned utilities during high-cost seasons.
Most Californians receive these credits each spring and fall under the state’s Cap-and-Trade Program.
Here’s who qualifies for a credit this month and how much they might receive:
Who is eligible to get the California Climate Credit?
According to the state program’s 2024 schedule, California customers of these utility companies are eligible to receive varying amounts of credit:
- Pacific Gas and Electric — $55.17
- Southern California Edison — $86
- San Diego Gas and Electric — $78.22
- Bear Valley Electric Service — $32.24
- Liberty Utilities — $131.01
- Pacific Power — $174.25
The California Climate Credit program does not include Sacramento Municipal Utilities District, which covers most of Sacramento County.
How can I save money on my electricity bill?
If your household is eligible, there is no action necessary to receive the credit on your electricity bill.
Households will receive the fall California Climate Credit on their October bills.
Savings could appear on your November power bills instead due to billing period differences.
“Billing periods vary by utility and may not always coincide with a calendar month,” the California Public Utilities Commission said.
When’s the next time I can get credit on my power bill?
Eligible customers will receive another credit in April.
“It doesn’t matter how much energy a customer consumes or the amount of their bill,” the commission wrote in a previous news release about the climate credit. “If the credit is larger than the bill, the remaining balance will roll forward until the California Climate Credit is used up.”
