YESTERYEARS
25 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the Sonora Elementary School District would be asking its 43 teachers for a refund on their salaries. After crunching the numbers, the school district found it had paid over what the contract called for in the previous year. The solution was 1 percent reduction in pay and a request from the school district that the teachers refund a total of $15,000. Trustees instructed Superintendent Ron Meade to negotiate with the teachers. However, the teachers union president, Ray Harrelson, considered the timing of the request illegal and ill-timed.
