West Modesto shooting becomes homicide case

A 25-year-old man died early Friday morning, about 12 hours after he was shot in west Modesto, authorities said.

Sir Jay Louis Taylor of Modesto succumbed to his wounds at 3 a.m., according to Sgt. Ivan Valencia of the Modesto Police Department.

Witnesses at the scene near Maple and Jefferson streets said they heard about 10 shots fired from what sounded like the same gun about 2:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they saw Taylor bleeding from at least one gunshot wound.

Officers began CPR as they waited for medical personnel, said Valencia.

Witnesses told officers that soon after hearing gunshots, they saw several men running away, Valencia said. It is unknown how the men might be involved in the shooting.

The incident occurred outdoors in the 100 block of Maple, police said.
