In brief: New Mistlin exhibit, music and more

The Central California Art Association at the Mistlin Gallery presents “Festival of Garden Arts” from June 16 to July 10, featuring two- and three-dimensional art for the garden or inspired by it.

The exhibit’s public reception will be held during the Third Thursday Art Walk, on June 18, from 5 to 9 p.m. this week. Music and refreshments will be available during the Art Walk event.

Mistlin Gallery hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1015 J St., Modesto. Admission is free. Call (209) 529-3369 or see www.ccartassn.org.

Shows at Black Oak

Black Oak Casino will stage concerts by Grammy-nominated bluegrass band Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen on June 17 and blues guitarist Coco Montoya on June 19.

Modesto native Frank Solivan and his band Dirty Kitchen will take the stage at 8 p.m. with their latest release, “Cold Spell,” which landed a 2015 Grammy nomination for best bluegrass album.

Solivan, who now lives in Virginia, is a Turlock High alumnus. Before starting Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, he served as part of the U.S. Navy band Country Current. His father, Frank Solivan Sr., still lives in Modesto.

Coco Montoya plays at 9 p.m. June 19. Publications such as the Philadelphia Daily News, Blues Revue, Living Blues and The Village Voice have ranked Montoya among the best guitarists and singers on the blues scene.

Carnegie Garden Party

The Carnegie Arts Center’s annual Garden Party returns to The Greenery Nursery on June 20.

Guests will enjoy an evening that includes artwork for sale by regional artists, live jazz music, wine, beer and bites from local restaurants.

The party will be held 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Greenery Nursery, 742 E Olive Ave., Turlock.

Tickets are $35 for Carnegie members, $50 general admission. Advance tickets are available at CarnegieGarden2015.Eventbrite.com and at the Carnegie Arts Center office, 250 North Broadway, Turlock.

First Fridays in the Park

Murphys Community Club presents its First Fridays in the Park concerts with the first event June 12. The June concert was delayed due to Bret Harte High School’s graduation. The concerts will be held the first Friday of the month from July to September.

First Fridays in the Park feature local music groups at the Murphys gazebo starting at 5:30 p.m. Beginning at 4 p.m., dinner will be available for purchase at $10. Local wines and other beverages will be on sale.

Tonight’s program will feature John Covert and Crystal Image playing classic rock, country, blues, oldies, originals and more. Covert has opened shows for groups such as Tower of Power, Chad and Jeremy, the Coasters, the Chiffons and Simon & Garfunkel.

Women’s Music Fest events

The Northern California Women’s Music Festival, set for October, also has music planned for the summer:

June 25: Youth Night featuring girl-fronted bands at Cafe Deva, 6 to 10 p.m. All ages, $10 at the door.

July 17: Tiki Night at Minnie’s with Alida McKeon, Direct Divide with Razz from the Blow Up Dolls, American Idol contestant Maddy Hudson, Low La La, Rainbow Girls, Athena McIntyre and Nadine the Band. 6 to 11 p.m., all ages until 10 p.m.; $10 at the door.

July 27 to Aug. 1: Livesound Workshop with Karrie Keyes, monitor engineer for Pearl Jam.
