Nuts eliminated from postseason contention

The Modesto Nuts were officially eliminated from the California League playoff race with Thursday night’s 8-2 to loss to the San Jose Giants, who completed a three-game sweep.

Modesto (66-70) has dropped four in a row, scoring just five runs during that span. One night after striking out 12 times and going just 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position, the Nuts struck out 11 more times Thursday night while going just 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position. They also committed four errors in losing for the fifth time in six games.

Ryan McMahon doubled twice in four at-bats for Modesto, which managed just five hits in all. RBI doubles by Ashley Graeter and Drew Weeks in the seventh and eighth innings provided Modesto’s scoring.

Modesto starter Konner Wade (8-9) was tagged for seven earned runs on 11 hits in 41/3 innings.

The Nuts close the season with a four-game series in Stockton against the Ports starting Friday night.
