Suspect identified in Modesto officer-involved shooting

Modesto police on Monday identified a suspect shot by a police officer Sunday night.

Sherman August, 29, was listed in stable condition, police spokeswoman Heather Graves said in a news release. His hometown was not available.

Authorities said August ran from a traffic stop and displayed a handgun.

The incident occurred on Prescott Road around 5:30 p.m. An officer pulled over a Cadillac sedan near the AutoZone just north of Plaza Parkway. Graves said Sunday night she did not know why the officer stopped the car.

August got out of the car and produced a handgun, Graves said.

“The officer gave several commands for August to drop the gun before discharging his own firearm, striking August twice,” she said in the release. The other people in the car remained at the scene and were taken to police headquarters for questioning, Graves said.

The officer was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard for an officer-involved shooting. His name has not been released.

Three separate and independent investigations have been launched into the shooting. The Modesto Police Department is conducting both a criminal and administrative investigation. The Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office is conducting its own review.
