Police subdue man cutting himself outside Turlock City Hall

A man set up camp in front of City Hall and started to light paper on fire and cut himself Tuesday, authorities said.

Police subdued the man and took him to a hospital for treatment.

According to authorities, police were called to City Hall, at 156 S. Broadway, at 8:49 a.m. Several people had called to report a man had “set up camp directly in front of the entrance,” police said in a news release. “The man was reportedly lighting paper on fire and cutting himself with a razor blade.”

Officers arrived to find the man cutting himself. They tried to get him to put down the razor blade, but he would not, authorities said. When he kept cutting himself, police sprayed him with pepper spray, but he still didn’t stop.

Police then used a beanbag gun, authorities said. That stopped the man long enough so police could approach him. When he continued to resist, officers deployed a Taser, but it had no effect on the man, who was wearing a thick coat.

Officers eventually restrained the man, whose name was not released. He was given medical attention and taken to a nearby hospital, police said.
