After taking a 6-5 lead in the top of the 12th inning, the Modesto Nuts gave up two runs in the bottom of the frame, resulting in a 7-6 loss to the Lancaster JetHawks on Monday night at The Hangar. Rayan Gonzalez replaced Shane Broyles to start the 12th and gave up a single to Danny Vasquez, the first hitter he faced. Vasquez moved to third on two wild pitches and scored the tying run on a single by Chan Moon, who eventually scored the winning run on a double to center by Teoscar Hernandez. Right fielder Michael Tauchman, who was 4 for 6 in the game, gave the Nuts the lead in the top of the 12th when he doubled in Rosell Herrera, who reached on a two-out single to center. Designated hitter David Bergin hit a three-run home run to left in the sixth, his fifth homer since joining Modesto on July 13. Modesto led 5-2 heading into the eighth, but starter Ryan Carpenter gave up singles to the first two batters he faced and was replaced by Peter Tago. The right-hander set down the first batter he faced, but Lancaster third baseman Rio Ruiz followed with a three-run homer to right that tied the score. The Nuts look to avoid a four-game sweep when the teams conclude their series Tuesday night at 6:30.
