Inland Empire bolted out to a seven-run lead after just two innings and never looked back as the 66ers defeated the Modesto Nuts 10-2 Thursday at San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino.
The Nuts will try to avert a series sweep when the teams wrap up their three-game set tonight at 7:05. Modesto begins a four-game series on Saturday in Lancaster.
Nuts starter Devin Burke surrendered nine runs – only four of them earned – and nine hits in five innings of work.
He walked three and struck out four. Burke was replaced by Peter Tago, who gave up the 66ers’ final run.
After Inland Empire starter Tyler DeLoach was replaced by Michael Smith to start the sixth, David Bergin belted a solo shot – his third round-tripper since joining the Nuts on July 13.
Patrick Valaika followed with a triple and scored on a Francisco Sosa groundout.
