Joe Simokaitis' two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Monday night broke a 4-all tie and lifted the High Desert Mavericks to a 6-4 victory over the Modesto Nuts.
Jay Cox homered for Modesto -- a two-run shot to left in the second inning that gave the Nuts an early 3-0 lead -- and Daniel Mayora went 3 for 4.
High Desert scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to move into the lead, but Modesto knotted the game at 4 in the the top of the sixth when Michael McKenry doubled home Mike Paulk, who reached on a one-out single.
Simokaitis put the Mavericks ahead for good in the eighth with a blast to right off reliever Will Harris (2-3). Modesto starter Keith Weiser allowed four earned runs on six hits in seven innings.

Aaron Cotter (3-3), the third High Desert pitcher of the night, worked two scoreless innings for the win.
