Notebook | Weather weighs in for 9th time, sending Marlin and Cope home

Some short takes from David Poole's Martinsville Speedway notebook on Friday:

Friday was the ninth time this season qualifying has been canceled because of weather. It's the second straight week that's happened and the third time in six Chase races.

Sterling Marlin and Derrike Cope were the two drivers whose cars failed to make the race as the field was set via the Sprint Cup rule book. Scott Speed did make the race in the No. 84 Toyota and will make his Cup debut on Sunday.

Michael Waltrip Racing will change the No. 00 Toyotas to the No. 47 beginning next weekend at Atlanta when Marcos Ambrose drives the car. Ambrose is expected to finish the season in it. He will drive the No. 47 for JTG-Daugherty Racing next year. That team will use Toyotas and be affiliated with Waltrip's team.

Many drivers and crew members waited until Friday morning to make the short trip from the Charlotte area to southern Virginia, but Jeff Burton came up Thursday night, catching a helicopter ride.

"Both my children had friends spend the night," Burton said. "My mother was there, my wife's mother and her father were there and, between the four of them, they'll drink enough wine to kill a small animal. So the only way for me to get any sleep was to leave."
