NASCAR veteran Kyle Petty will not compete this weekend in the Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway as Petty Enterprises looks to evaluate its No. 45 Dodge team.
The organization has decided to use Truck series regular Chad McCumbee in the No. 45 for Sunday's race at Texas, team officials confirmed Monday night.
McCumbee substituted for Petty in two races last season while Petty served as a commentator in the middle of the season during TNT broadcasts of Sprint Cup Series races. He finished 25th in his debut at Pocono and 41st at Michigan.
Petty has struggled this season. His best finish so far was 28th at Bristol, Tenn., and the No. 45 dropped out of the top 35 in car owner points. Petty failed to qualify for Sunday's race at Martinsville, Va., and missed his first race of the season.
