They're going to put Junior Johnson in the movies

Redwood Palms Pictures has signed to produce a film about stock car racing legend Junior Johnson that is based on the book "Junior Johnson: Brave In Life," an authorized biography co-authored by Tom Higgins and Steve Waid.

Shooting is scheduled to begin this fall.

"The story takes place during the Great Depression, in a time when many people fought daily for their survival," said Mike DiManno, CEO of Redwood Palms. "And out of that adversity was born one of the greatest drivers we've ever known."

Redwood Palms is partnering with screenwriters Fred Griffith and Chris Mulkey.

Waid, a motorsports journalism veteran, is currently vice president for editorial development at Street & Smith's Sports Group, publishers of NASCAR Scene and NASCAR Illustrated.

Higgins, who covered NASCAR for The Charlotte Observer before his retirement, is considered to be among the leading independent historians of stock car racing. He writes a blog on ThatsRacin.com called Tom Higgins' Scuffs.
