AJ Allmendinger, who drives the No. 84 Toyotas for Red Bull Racing in Sprint Cup competition, will start on the outside of Row 1 when this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona rolls off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Allmendinger averaged 127.140 mph around the 3.56-mile course Thursday in qualifying the Michael Shank Racing team’s Ford-powered Daytona prototype. Only Oswaldo Negri, driving the other car for that team, went faster at 127.152 mph.
Scott Pruett will start sixth in a Chip Ganassi-owned car with a team that includes Ganassi Cup drivers Dario Franchitti and Juan Pablo Montoya. Two-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson is part of team that will start 11th, while the team that includes Kurt Busch starts 13th for a team that includes IndyCar star Helio Castroneves.
