Ganassi team working toward stock car debut for Dario Franchitti in ARCA race at Talladega

DOVER, Del. - Nextel Cup Series team owner Chip Ganassi is working to get newly crowned IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitii entered in the Oct. 5 Automobile Racing Club of America series race at Talladega, Ala. - the first step in his new stock car racing career.

The Charlotte Observer and first reported on Sept. 7 Franchitti was the likely candidate to replace David Stremme in Ganassi's No. 40 Dodge next season.

"We have a few little hurdles to get done before we can announce something (with Franchitti), but we are feverishly working at it. We are confident we are going to be able to put something together with him," Ganassi said Sunday at Dover International Speedway.

A formal announcement of Franchitti's move is expected this week, sources said.

Franchitti's schedule for testing and running NASCAR events will be a "work in progress," Ganassi said.

"It's going to be much like with Juan (Pablo Montoya). You're going to have to constantly adjust and readjust for good days and bad. If and when it happens, we're up for the challenge."

Asked if Franchitti knows for certain the Cup series is where he wants to compete full time, Ganassi said: "He definitely wants to do it."
