Longtime NASCAR timing and scoring official Morris Metcalfe died Thursday in Winston-Salem, N.C., at the age of 81.
Mr. Metcalfe worked for the organization in five decades before retiring after the 2002 Daytona 500.
He also is credited with founding the sport’s first fan club, one started in 1955 for Cup champion Lee Petty.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem.
