Just a few years ago, surpassing Iggy Katona’s record of 79 ARCA stock car victories seemed unattainable to Frank Kimmel.
With the competition in the ARCA RE/MAX Series so much closer these days, and race seasons stretching no more than 23 events per year, victories, even for eight-time series champion Kimmel, were becoming less frequent.
Nonetheless, Kimmel, well on the way to a ninth series title at the age of 45, is making a run at Katona’s seemingly unattainable mark.
Back-to-back wins at Springfield, Ill., and the Milwaukee Mile the last two weeks have raised Kimmel’s career total to 71.
“Every year, the competition in ARCA is increasing and the challenge to go out and win several races in the year is that much harder,” he said. “But that is a credit to the series and the amount of talent they have been able to draw year after year.”
