Bill Davis says test part of effort to prepare Jacques Villeneuve for Cup competition

Add 1997 Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve to the growing list of open-wheel drivers heading into NASCAR.

Villeneuve, son of the late champion Gilles Villenueve, also won a championship in the Championship Auto Racing Teams circuit as well as the 1995 Indianapolis 500, will run in seven Truck Series and one Automobile Racing Club of America event later this year for Bill Davis Racing to prepare for the Cup Series in 2008.

“It'll be Cup, next year,” Davis said.

Davis said it is not determined whether Villeneuve would replace Jeremy Mayfield in the No. 36 Toyotas or drive with another team.

Villeneuve is scheduled to test in a BDR truck on Monday and Tuesday at Chicagoland Speedway.
