Visalia snaps Modesto Nuts’ three-game winning streak

The Modesto Nuts have five weeks left to build their first four-game winning streak.

They missed an opportunity Monday night when the Visalia Rawhide scored four runs in the third and fourth innings to defeat the Nuts 5-3 at Thurman Field. The win snapped the Nuts’ three-game streak.

Modesto put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth after Josh Fuentes’ single, an error and a sacrifice by Dom Nunez. Visalia closer Cameron Gann ended it by inducing a popup from Troy Stein and a Collin Ferguson groundout.

Nunez’s solo homer, his third in his last six games, closed the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth. Visalia extended the lead in the sixth, however, as Modesto starter Parker French (6-8) gave up four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Modesto took an early 1-0 lead after Wes Rogers singled, stole second and scored on Omar Carrizales’ two-out RBI double to left. From there, Visalia starter Joel Payamps (4-3) stiffened and allowed only five hits in 7 1/3 innings.

4 Errors committed by the Modesto Nuts on Monday night

Visalia took the lead to stay on Austin Byler’s two-run double in the third, then added two more in the fourth on Henry Castillo’s double, a run-scoring error and an RBI triple by Robelys Reyes.

The Nuts closed to 5-3 in the eighth on Rogers’ RBI double.

Modesto and Visalia meet at Thurman on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The Nuts begin a four-game series at Lancaster on Thursday night.
