The Bee’s Stanislaus District football rankings (10-9-14)

LARGE SCHOOLS

(Modesto Metro Conference, Central California Conference, Valley Oak League, Western Athletic Conference

1. (1) Sierra (5-0) – Proved deserving of The Bee’s No. 1 ranking with a gutsy, 17-14 win over No. 3 Central Catholic.

2. (2) Oakdale (5-0) – Braces for a Saturday showdown against ancient rival Manteca at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

3. (3) Central Catholic (3-2) – Losses this year have been to St. Mary’s and Sierra, each by less than a touchdown.

4. (6) Merced (3-2) – Opens Central California Conference play this week against Atwater in the annual Santa Fe Bowl.

5. (4) Manteca (4-1) – Delivered a sluggish 14-12 victory over Lathrop last week; did loss to Central Catholic previous week take some zip out of the Buffaloes?

6. (8) Pitman (4-0) – Hosts No. 10 Buhach Colony this week then travel to take on No. 4 Merced next week. We’ll learn a lot about Pitman shortly.

7. (9) Downey (4-1) – Knights took command of the Modesto Metro Conference race with 35-32 win over Modesto.

8. (5) Modesto (4-1) – Panthers get a bye this week after suffering season’s first loss; come back with game against tough Gregori squad.

9. (7) Patterson (4-1) – The Tigers throttled Central Valley 35-7 last week; get Ceres High on Friday.

10. (10) Buhach Colony (3-2) – No shame in suffering a 45-30 loss to St. Mary’s. Thunder remains in rankings for at least another week.

Dropped out: none. On the bubble: Davis (4-1), Greogri (4-1), Livingston (5-1), Los Banos (3-2).

SMALL SCHOOLS

(Trans-Valley League, Mother Lode League, Southern League, Central California Athletic Association

1. (1) Sonora (4-1) – After outscoring first two Mother Lode League foes by a combined 92 to zip, Wildcats should get a stiffer test this week against Summerville.

2. (2) Modesto Christian (4-1) – Opens Trans-Valley League play against Riverbank, which got its first win last week.

3. (3) Escalon (3-2) – Cougars had a bye last week, following their narrow, 14-7 loss to Bear River in Grass Valley.

4. (4) Hughson (4-1) – Huskies face toughest opposition to date when they host No. 3 Escalon.

5. (6) Le Grand (3-2) – After a rough start, look who’s undefeated (2-0) in the Southern League: That’s right, the five-time reigning SL champs.

6. (5) Ripon Christian (4-1) – Knights suffered a tough, 15-14 loss – their first – to No. 5 Le Grand last week; Delhi up next.

7. (7) Mariposa (3-2) – After an uneven start, looks who’s 2-0 in the Southern League: That’s right, the team picked by SL coaches to win the conference.

8. (8) Orestimba (4-1) – Coach Aaron Souza says the SL is wide open. He’s right; his Warriors host No. 7 Mariposa in a key matchup Friday.

9. (9) Gustine (4-1) – The Redskins’ lone loss this year was to No. 5 Le Grand … in Le Grand … by a mere three points.

10. (nr) Summerville (4-2) – Bears rejoin the Top 10 this week after 47-13 rout of Denair.

Dropped out: Delhi. On the bubble: Delhi (3-2), Hilmar (2-3).
