Alyssa Waltman has delivered a number of big hits for the Los Banos High softball team during a four-year varsity career.
However, none were as important as her ninth-inning home run to beat rival Pacheco last week, 4-2. The two teams finished the Western Athletic Conference regular season tied in the standings, so a winner-take-all playoff game was required to settle the No. 3 seed.
The Tigers were alive to start this week because of Waltman, whose walk-off three-run home run bounced off the top of the fence in left field.
“The home run was definitely one of the biggest hits of my career,” she said. “It meant everything to come through for my team. It was the perfect ending to our regular season.”
The blast came with two outs in the ninth.
“I was going up bat just trying to get a base hit and bring in a run,” said Waltman, a Dominican University of California commit. “I knew that if I didn’t then our season was over, so I just wanted to keep it going.”
