Riverbank's Fernandez third in college debut

Riverbank's German Fernandez placed third in his first collegiate cross country race last weekend.

Fernandez, a freshman at Oklahoma State University, finished the 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 12 seconds. He finished just ahead of two teammates; they were running together as part of their team strategy.

Oklahoma State won its invitational.

"It went really well," Fernandez told okstate.com. "We stayed as a group the whole way. That was our plan; just don't go out too fast, go out smart. We just stayed strong the whole way so it was incredibly fitting that we finished together."

At Riverbank High last season, Fernandez was a two-time state cross country champion and set the state 3,200-meter record at the CIF State Track and Field Championships.
