It was a battle between two of the Modesto Metro Conference's top soccer teams, and it was under the lights at Downey High's Chuck Hughes Stadium.

Perhaps it was fitting that the Modesto and Downey High soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie Tuesday.

T.J. VanderVeen scored the lone goal for Modesto (11-1-2, 3-1-2), while Nick Cash found the net for the Knights (5-2-3, 3-0-2).

The teams were playing at Downey as part of an MMC tripleheader that included all six Modesto public schools. The same tripleheader will take place twice more this season.

JOHANSEN 3, ENOCHS 1, at Downey -- Carlos Navarette scored two goals, leading the Vikings (4-0-2 MMC) past the Eagles.

Navarette scored the game's first goal midway throughout he first half, and Guilherne Machado almost immediately followed with the equalizer. But Brian May found the net for Johansen soon after that, giving Johansen a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

All four of the game's goals were scored in the first half.

DAVIS 3, BEYER 1, at Downey -- The Spartans (1-3-2 MMC) came roaring back from a 1-0 deficit, scoring three goals in a 12-minute stretch toward the end of the game for the victory over the Patriots (0-5-1 MMC).

Juan Escalera, Juan Figueroa and Chris Lopez all scored for Davis.

CENTRAL VALLEY 2, SIERRA 1, at Central Valley -- The Hawks (9-0-1, 4-0 VOL) whipped the Timberwolves (0-4 VOL) 7-1 in the Sierra tournament this season, but they needed a penalty kick by Antonio Cabrera in the 70th minute to win this one.
