Modesto Christian wins big

SALIDA -- It didn't take long for Modesto Christian High's girls basketball team to start a new winning streak.

The Crusaders had won 13 in a row before Saturday's non-league loss to Pacific Hills of West Hollywood, and rebounded from that game with a 49-point Trans-Valley League victory Tuesday.

The Crusaders posted another lopsided win Friday, as four players scored in double figures in a 72-18 win over Hughson. MC (17-3, 8-0) is the only TVL team with fewer than three league losses.

Guard Brandi Henton and 6-foot forward Jessica Graham scored 12 points apiece and the Crusaders led 41-9 at halftime. Sophomore guard Marinna McKeever, a transfer from Waterford, and sophomore Taryn Garza scored 11 each.

Garza played strong inside, finishing with 10 rebounds, and had three assists. Graham led the defense with five steals.

Trans-Valley League

RIPON CHR. 47, ESCALON 28, at Escalon -- Raeline Witt scored 15 points and Brianna DeVries chipped in 12 in helping the Knights (11-8, 5-3 TVL) top the Cougars (7-12, 2-6). The victory leaves the Knights in third place, just just one game behind second-place Hughson.

It was a signficant win for RC, which is hoping to improve its seeding in the upcoming playoffs. The Knights were 10th in the power ratings which were released Tuesday and which determine playoff teams and the seeding. RC has won twice since then and will benefit the rest of the season because its TVL foes are Division IV -- and bonus points are awarded for beating larger teams.

RIPON 42, RIVERBANK 27, at Riverbank -- Jessica Blythe scored 18 points and the Indians (7-13, 4-4) knocked off the Bruins (1-16, 0-8). The Indians host Modesto Christian on Monday night.

Mother Lode League

LINDEN 55, SUMMERVILLE 25, at Linden -- Michelle Knipper had 20 points and Nina Sanguinetti 15 to lead the Lions (13-5, 5-1 MLL) over the Bears.
