CERES -- Sophomore forward Jode Johnson scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lift the host Bulldogs to a 45-37 win over Atwater on Thursday in the first day of the third annual Ceres Lions Club Tournament.
Ceres improved to 4-4 on the season, while the Falcons dropped to 3-5.
BRET HARTE 50, HUGHSON 33 -- Wendie Canez scored eight of her game-high 13 points in the second quarter, when the Bullfrogs (4-2) turned several steals into baskets and opened a 30-12 halftime lead. Canez also had seven steals. Katie Gott and Alex Ballard had 10 points and six rebounds each for Bret Harte.
- Bret Harte beat Hughson in the first game of the round-robin event and will face Atwater at 6 p.m. today. Ceres plays Hughson at 7:30.
Lodi Christmas Tournament
KENNEDY 69, PATTERSON 49, at Lodi -- Cassie Coble led the Tigers in a losing cause with 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Shavon Furrow added five points and led in rebounds (five) and assists (four).
Patterson (3-2) played one of its better games, coach Jason McCleery said, but couldn't stop Kennedy's outside shots. Patterson plays Christian Brothers today at 3:30.
MARIPOSA 33, WATERFORD 22, at Waterford -- Morgan Foley led the Grizzlies to victory in the Southern League opener, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring seven points.
RIPON CHR. 54, JIM ELLIOT 53, at Ripon Christian -- Briana DeVries' offensive put-back gave RC (4-4) the lead for good at 54-53 with 1:30 left. Jim Elliot had one last chance to take the lead with 40 seconds left, but Raeline Witt stole the ball and sealed the win.
Jim Elliot jumped out to a 10-0 lead. But the Knights battled back, using full-court pressure in the fourth quarter that led to some easy baskets.
DeVries finished with 17 points and she and Kayla Evans made four steals.
GOLDEN VALLEY 53, JOHANSEN 31, at Golden Valley -- Porsha Grayson had 17 points in helping the Cougars top the Vikings.
PITMAN 64, ENOCHS 31, at Pitman -- Tiare Jennings had 20 points for the Pride, who led the Eagles 20-7 after one period.
LOS BANOS 63, CLOVIS 44, at Clovis -- Shelly Martin had a season-high 19 points and Brooke Silva 14 in leading the Tigers to victory. She canned three 3-pointers.
BEAR CREEK 43, TURLOCK CHR. 39, at Turlock Christian -- TC (3-5) put up a good fight against its Division I foe, with Bianca Davoodian getting 14 points. Davoodian also grabbed 18 rebounds and made five steals.
