High School Roundup: Beyer just needs 8 minutes to win

After an hour of scoreless soccer Friday, Beyer High provided eight frantic minutes of action.

Ivan Nichols and Mitchell Simon scored within that span to lift the Patriots to a 2-0 Modesto Metro Conference victory over Johansen.

Andrew Ball made six saves in Beyer's (1-4-2) first league win of the season.

MODESTO 5, ENOCHS 1, at Modesto -- Victor Serrano recorded a hat trick, and the Panthers scored all of their goals in the first half in a rout of the Eagles. David O'Neil's second-half score averted the shutout.

DAVIS 0, DOWNEY 0, at Davis -- Diego Vera made 12 saves for the Knights (4-1-2 MMC) and Kyle Ausema eight for the host Spartans (2-3-2).

Girls Water Polo

MODESTO GOES 2-1, at Turlock -- The Panthers lost 12-2 to Lincoln-Stockton, but beat Atwater 5-2 and Turlock 9-3 in the Central California Championships. Erica Austin totaled seven goals and Sakara Seng five.

JOHANSEN SWEPT, at NorCal Championships (Palo Alto) -- The Vikings went 0-3 in the tournament, losing 12-8 to Rio Americano, 6-2 to Menlo-Atherton and 8-7 in sudden death to Palo Alto. Andie Plunkett scored eight goals on the day, including five against Palo Alto. Jodi Hanson totaled seven scores.
