Volleyball Roundup: Hughson takes charge in victory over Denair

After splitting the first two games Tuesday night, Hughson High used the momentum from a narrow win in Game 3 for a 25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 25-20 victory over visiting Denair in a nonleague volleyball match.

Taylor Dawson had seven kills and Katie Bishop had three assists to lead the Huskies (3-3) to their four-game victory, despite a strong night by Denair's Kortne Bacca (11 assists, seven digs).

LOS BANOS 3, DOS PALOS 0, at Los Banos -- Jessica DeArmon, at 5 feet 8 inches, is often facing a taller opponent when she looks to the other side of the net. But as Los Banos High's top hitter, she has little choice but to do her best despite the odds.

"She's not the tallest girl, but she has a good vertical jump and she's very mobile," Los Banos coach Greg Soliz said. "She took control of the net tonight."

DeArmon had seven kills and four blocks to lead the Tigers (5-7) past rival the Broncos 25-20, 25-15, 25-17.

EAST UNION 3, TURLOCK CHR. 1, at Turlock -- Megan Spinks had seven kills and six aces to lead the Lancers to a 25-23, 13-25, 25-19, 25-17 win over the Eagles (2-3). TC's Greta Gonzalez tried to match Spinks at the next with six kills, but "East Union surprised us. They looked good," TC coach Keith Landmeier said.

HILMAR 3, LIVINGSTON 1, at Livingston -- With Lindsey Mendes (16 digs) and Madison Harris (18 assists) keeping the ball moving, hitters Alyssa Xavier and Caitlin Benning had seven kills apiece in the Yellowjackets' (9-0, 1-0 WAC) 25-20, 23-25, 25-9, 25-21 win over the Wolves (0-6, 0-1).

"It was a pretty scrappy game," Livingston coach Suzy Pimentel said. "We kept the ball in play (and) they didn't let it hit the ground."

ATWATER 3, TRACY 1, at Atwater -- Ali Copeland (21 digs) and Cassie Fensin (nine kills) set the tempo as the Falcons (3-0) won the final two games for a 25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20 win over the Bulldogs (1-1).

CLOVIS WEST 3, GOLDEN VALLEY 1, at Clovis -- Gianna Bandoni (10 kills) and Katelyn Bennett (five blocks) provided some power at the net, but the Cougars were no match for the Golden Eagles.

GV will keep busy this weekend, as it hosts a 32-team tournament at eight sites in the Stanislaus District. Play opens Friday, with the championship brackets playing Saturday.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 3, GUSTINE 0, at Gustine -- The Raiders (5-1) rolled to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-13 win over the Redskins (3-5), as Kaitlin Wesenberg had six skills and sister Kendall had six aces and nine assists.
