High School Roundup: Beyer awaits MMC

The Beyer High boys soccer team got ready for its league opener by downing Lincoln-Stockton 4-1 Wednesday.

Ivan Nichols scored two-first half goals, helping the Patriots (1-3-1) to a 3-0 halftime lead on their way past the Trojans (1-3).

Andrew Ball had nine saves for the Patriots, who open Modesto Metro Conference play Friday against Modesto.

MODESTO CHR. 12, DENAIR 2, at Salida -- Trevor Grimbleby produced his second hat trick in two days, scoring all three goals in the first half as MC (4-0-1) rolled past the Coyotes. Jesse Briganti had two goals for MC, which led 7-1 at halftime.

Denair's bright spot was Paul Oei, whose agility and ballhandling skills produced two goals.

"He's a little guy, but he plays with a huge amount of heart," said MC assistant Clive Grimbleby. "He's got good ball control."

MERCED 2, DAVIS 1, at Merced -- The Bears (5-1-1) got goals from Chippi Murillo and Freddie Hernandez.

HILMAR 5, LOS BANOS 3, at Los Banos -- Hilmar graduated some key players from last year's Division V section championship team. But two weeks into the 2007 season, it's clear Hilmar remains among the region's best.

Jordan Bettencourt scored two goals and Lucas Behm had two assists to lead Hilmar. It was 3-3 with 11 minutes left before the Yellowjackets (6-1-1) pulled away. Hilmar's lone loss is to Atwater, a Division I school that is 7-1-1.

ATWATER 11, SONORA 0, at Atwater -- Jesse Horta and Jorge Carmona had hat tricks as Atwater (7-1-1) blanked the Wildcats (2-3). Goalie Fernando Rios even got in on the scoring, coming out of the goal to collect his first score of the season.


TURLOCK 3, BEYER 2, at Turlock -- Paige Turner had 13 kills, seven digs and five aces for Turlock (1-2) in a 15-25 20-25 25-19, 26-24, 15-12 triumph. Kaycee Martinez had 13 kills for Beyer (0-3) and Danielle Bombardier six aces.

TURLOCK CHR. 3, MODESTO CHR. 1, at Turlock Christian -- Greta Gonzales had 12 kills and Bianca Davoodian and Mallory Iltis four aces as TC (2-2) prevailed 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 25-9. Lauren Jamison had 11 kills and Lynelle King 17 digs for MC (1-5).

TC coach Keith Landmeier said, "MC was getting us on their short game, and we finally figured that out in the fourth game."

OAKDALE 3, PITMAN 0, at Pitman -- Alexis Evans had seven kills and seven digs and Jaci Powell had seven kills and three aces for Oakdale (6-0) in a 27-25, 25-21, 25-15 win. Tanya Gemperle had 16 kills, four digs and two aces for Pitman (2-2).

SIERRA 3, JOHANSEN 0, at Johansen -- Heather Scharmman had six kills, four blocks and four aces for Sierra (4-0) in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 defensive battle. Kristie Ortega had 10 kills and three aces for Johansen (0-3).

CALAVERAS 3, HUGHSON 1, at Hughson -- Kelly Keyla had 22 digs for Calaveras in a 24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 win. Marissa Carver had five kills for Hughson (2-2).

PATTERSON 3, LOS BANOS 2, at Los Banos -- Chelsea Taylor had five aces and 17 assists for Patterson in a 25-17, 25-17, 15-25, 22-25, 15-17 win.

EAST UNION 3, LIVINGSTON 1, at Manteca -- EU won 25-23, 17-25, 26-24, 25-22 behind Megan Spinks' nine kills, eight digs and 38 assists.

Girls Golf

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 202, OAKDALE 228, at Dryden Park -- Giovanna Pecchenil and Kirsten Kim shot 12-over 49s to lead the Raiders (4-0).
