The inaugural Billy Bell Cup will be held Thursday and Friday at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto.
Named for the course architect who designed DRCC’s original 18 holes in 1947, the event is for mid-amateur players (ages 25-54) and seniors (55 and older).
“Being that it’s the inaugural event, it’s kind of flown under the radar,” said Brent Gardner, sales director at Central Valley Automotive Group and the tournament founder. “I think this is going to end up being a pretty big deal. At least, that’s the goal.”
Gardner, a Central Catholic graduate who played golf at Chico State, said the tournament will feature top local talent, as well as some of the best golfers from around Northern California. He’ll team with former Stanislaus State standout Andy Moren, now the golf coach at Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Other local standouts include Modestans Jeff and Patrick Burda, Dave Halvorson, Jay Ward, Ken Dieker and Jeff and Patrick Burda, and Ken and Nick Webb of Turlock.
Casey Boyns, playing out of Nicklaus Club in Monterey, and Randy Haag, who plays out of the famed Olympic Club in San Francisco, also are slated to compete.
Thursday’s action for the four-ball format will begin at noon with a shotgun start. Golfers will tee off Friday at 8 a.m.
The event is free to the public.
