The unbeaten Modesto Junior College women’s soccer team began a busy three-game week with a big win Tuesday.
Two goals by Marissa Rouse were enough to give the Pirates, tied for first with Fresno in Northern California and sixth in the state rankings, a 2-1 Big 8 Conference win at Diablo Valley.
Yaritza Arista and Danielle Nava picked up the assists and goalkeeper Elizabeth Amaya had eight saves for the Pirates (9-0, 2-0). Diablo Valley fell to 3-6-1 and 0-3.
Modesto will welcome American River today for a 3:30 p.m. rescheduled game at the MJC West Campus field.
The Pirates led American River 2-0 last week when lightning stopped the game in the 67th minute. The result is not verified by FIFA rules until the game reaches the 70th minute, hence today’s re-do.
“This is a character test, and hopefully, we will earn the victory that we had in hand,” coach Steve Aristotelous said.
Pirates beaten – The Pirates couldn’t hold onto an early 1-0 lead and were beaten at Santa Rosa 4-2. MJC (4-2-2, 1-1 Big 8) still was even 1-1 at halftime before the Bear Cubs (5-3-2, 2-1) dominated the second half.
Modesto started fast on a goal in the 17th minute by Bruce Ocana off an assist by Edgar Lopez. After Santa Rosa’s rally, the Pirates drew closer late in the game on Jorge Aguilar’s goal, assisted by Victor Fuentes.
