An impressive Big 8 Conference-opening win by the unbeaten Modesto Junior College women’s soccer team was tarnished by a painful injury.
Forward Alexis Steele is lost for the season after a collision with the Sacramento goalkeeper during the second half of the Pirates’ 6-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at MJC West. The contact resulted in a redcard assessed to the goalkeeper.
“Alexis is a workhorse player. It’s so emotional. You never want to see one of your players injured like that,” coach Steve Aristotelous said.
MJC (8-0, 1-0), ranked second in Northern California, used two goals by Jenna Viss and one apiece by Yaritza Arista, Tyler Fenton, Andrea Zaragoza and Danielle Nava to lead 6-0 at halftime. Marissa Rouse accounted for two assists, followed by one apiece by Steele and Karissa Cruz.
Sac fell to 3-2-1 and 0-1.
MJC men win – Humberto Salcedo split the defense, received a good pass from Bruce Ocana and finished from about eight yards out with 15 minutes left, the decisive goal in the Pirates’ 2-1 Big 8-opening win over Delta. Salcedo accounted for both MJC goals.
The Pirates (3-1-2, 1-0) watched their 1-0 lead disappear when the Mustangs (5-2-3, 0-1) scored on a set piece early in the second half.
