1. (1) Merced (2-1): Bears got a rude awakening against Edison of Fresno, trailing 36-0 after three quarters; Bears hope to turn it around vs. Del Oro.

2. (2) Sonora (3-0): 'Cats 3-0 vs. MMC, but now VOL play begins; Comfortable opener at Ceres, but Manteca, Oakdale, Sierra wait in the wings.

3. (3) Turlock (3-0): Bulldogs grinding out early wins with running game but host Los Banos and its potent air attack in Friday's conference opener.

4. (4) Manteca (3-0): The 27-22 win over Tracy makes it clear Buffs are talented; Tracy had been averaging 52 points, but Buffs controlled them.

5. (nr) Pitman (3-1): QB Tyler Snodgrass gives Pride an option with his strong arm. Talented RBs and team speed make Pitman a threat in CCC.


1. (2) Central Catholic (2-1): Raiders put together a complete game in 41-0 rout. Friday's game at Johansen is one of Central's biggest in years.

2. (3) Escalon (3-0): Big-play Cougars follow upset of Patterson by beating CCC's Buhach Colony. Four TDs of at least 55 yards in victory.

3. (1) Modesto Christian (2-1): Went to wire before falling 46-41 to unbeaten Chowchilla. MC still has work to on defense if it wants a crown.

4. (4) Hilmar (3-0): Donovan Smith's field goal as time expired sealed 10-8 upset of Central Valley. Defense has allowed eight points in 12 quarters.

5. (5) Patterson (2-1): Daniel Reza's arm put Tigers back on track, with two TDs to upset VOL contender Sierra. MMC foes await next two weeks.
