Big inning costs Modesto

Host San Jose exploded for three runs in the sixth inning and went on to defeat the Modesto Nuts 5-4 on Sunday night.

Nuts starter Keith Weiser allowed only one run and held a 2-1 lead entering the sixth, when allowed three singles and a two-run double to Dayton Butler. The Giants added another run in the seventh.

Modesto, trailing 5-2, rallied in the eighth. Mike Paulk walked and Michael McKenry homered to left.

With two out, Jason Van Kooten singled, then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and passed ball. But Nelson Robledo struck out swinging to end the rally.

Modesto opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth on a two-run home run by Victor Ferrante.

Weiser took the loss, allowing four runs -- three earned -- and nine hits in six innings. He struck out four.
