One of the knocks -- no pun intended -- on the Modesto Nuts is that they don't consistently hit the baseball.
Well, they out-hit their opponent 9-6 on Tuesday, showing signs that the offense is coming around.
However, the number that matters is runs, and the host San Jose Giants had just one more, which is enough to earn a victory. The Nuts were defeated 2-1.
There were three Nuts who had two hits -- Mike Paulk, Geoff Strickland and Cole Garner -- but only one of Modesto's nine hits was for extra bases. That was Paulk's first-inning double.
San Jose scored first when Sharlon Schoop singled in Brett Pill in the second.
Modesto answered in the fourth. Daniel Mayora's sacrifice grounder pushed in Garner.
Schoop scored the game-winner an inning later on Matt Downs' double.
Keith Weiser threw seven solid innings but was dealt the loss.
