Modesto's Drueen is top scholar-athlete
Katie Drueen of Modesto High was named a 2008 CIF/Farmers Scholar-Athlete of the Year with Andrew Flood of Rancho Bernardo in San Diego. The award is given to those who excel in the classroom and sports and are "strong contributors to their schools and communities," according to a California Interscholastic Federation news release. Drueen was named to The Bee's All-District cross country team in 2007 and is a four-time selection to the All-Modesto Metro Conference team. She has a 4.7 grade-point average and is ranked No. 1 in her class of 655 students. She'll attend Notre Dame in the fall and plans to be a doctor. "Perhaps of the highest importance in her character development has been her willingness and desire to give her limited and valuable personal time to others," Modesto High counselor C. Bonnie Feuer said in the news release. "She has done numerous pieces of volunteer work and has garnered awards recognizing this work as well as the compassion she has exhibited."
Altamont racer dies
An amateur race at Altamont Motorsports Park near Tracy resumed Sunday after being halted the day before because of the death of a 47-year-old driver who slammed his junk vehicle into a wall. Court Summerfield of Alameda was killed late on the first day of the 24 Hours of LeMons event. "He basically went head-on into a wall without any evasive measures, stopping or braking or anything like that," track president Jeff Macey said of Summerfield. Macey estimated that Summerfield, one of 90 racers in the event featuring cars worth no more than $500, was traveling 50 mph when he crashed. Macey said the LeMons event never had any serious accidents until Saturday. In 2002, Manteca driver Mark Hutto died from injuries suffered after hitting the wall during a Late Model race at Altamont.
