Stanislaus' Mild off to coach UC Davis
Eric Mild, who has been the men's soccer coach at Cal State Stanislaus since 2001, resigned Wednesday to take an assistant coach position at UC Davis. Mild cited his relationship with Aggies head coach Dwayne Shaffer, who he played for at Santa Rosa Junior College and coached with at UC Davis from 1997-2001, and his family's love of the area as compelling reasons to return to the Division I program. Mild was a part of Shaffer's staff in 1999, when UC Davis won a school-record 16 games and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 23 years after winning the West Region championship.
Central Catholic, Oakdale, BC ranked
Buhach Colony High (15-3) is No. 10 in the CalHiSports.com Division I state rankings and No. 8 in the Northern California poll. Oakdale (12-2) is No. 10 in the Division III state poll, and Central Catholic (12-4) is No. 9 in Division IV. Bret Harte (11-4) is on the bubble for the Division IV rankings and Mariposa (10-5) on the Division V bubble, meaning both are on the verge of breaking into the state rankings.
Stanislaus softball No. 22 in the nation
After winning 18 of its last 22 games, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team landed back in the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association rankings. The Warriors (23-17, 16-8 CCAA) are 22nd in the country and jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 in the West Region rankings. The Warriors lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings over No. 6 Humboldt State (36-14, 13-7 CCAA) by percentage points, .667 to .650.
Former Delta coach is hired at Sac State
Sacramento State has chosen Brian Katz, the head coach at San Joaquin Delta College, as its men's head basketball coach, The Sacramento Bee learned. Washington assistant Cameron Dollar and Cabrillo College head coach Tony Marcopulos said they received phone calls Wednesday informing them they weren't chosen, leaving Katz as the pick.
Johnson to LSU?
LSU intends to hire Stanford's Trent Johnson, who led the Cardinal to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, as its new basketball coach. Several people at LSU familiar with the selection process said a formal announcement was expected today. The people asked to remain anonymous because the hiring wasn't yet official.
