College roundup: Bottom of order boosts MJC baseball

Terrance Marin struck out 10 and Daniel Suarez homered Thursday, leading the Modesto Junior College baseball team to a 4-2 win over Delta.

The Pirates improved to 16-11 and 5-4 in Big 8 Conference play in stopping the Mustangs (14-17, 3-6).

Marin scattered eight hits, allowing single runs in the fourth and ninth innings. He walked three.

Shortstop Suarez led off the fourth inning with a homer that upped Modesto's lead to 3-1 and singled in a run in the eighth after second baseman Sammy Bryant's one-out triple.

Bryant hit No. 7 in the lineup, Suarez No. 8 and Matt Schwark — who singled and doubled — No. 9.

MERCED 11, REEDLEY 5, at Merced — The Blue Devils (23-8, 10-4 Central Valley Conference) broke a 4-4 tie with two in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by Ben Gorang and Brian Gilbertson sandwiched around a balk.

After Reedley (5-21, 2-12) made it 6-5 in the top of the eighth, Merced put it away with a five-run eighth highighted by Ruben Perez's two-run single. Gorang and Kori Mello had three hits and Perez three RBIs.

JC Softball

MODESTO JC 3, REEDLEY 1, at Modesto — Jessica Merriam blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Modesto Junior College the victory.

Missy Corral singled to open the inning, then Merriam sent an 0-2 pitch over the center-field fence 220 feet away.

MJC (14-23) starter Kacey Beard pitched six innings of shutout ball. Rachel Rebello went the last three innings, giving up a run in the seventh. Modesto opened the scoring in the first.

Modesto had five hits off Reedley's Brianna Hogg — Merriam was 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

MERCED COLLEGE 8-9, TAFT 1-0, at Taft — The She-Devils (26-12, 12-0 CVC) sprayed the ball around the field for 28 hits.

Kristen Kronberg (Game 1) and Deborah McCollum picked up the wins, helping MC stay perfect in CVC play.

Nicole Blades-Moore homered in the opener, and Megan McColloch went 3 for 4 in the nightcap.
