Freshman Terrance Marin set the tone for the Modesto Junior College baseball team Thursday.
Marin pitched a gem in a 6-5 victory over host Sierra in a Big 8 Conference game. The Orestimba High graduate struck out three in seven innings, holding the Wolverines scoreless until the fifth. Sierra (22-7, 3-3 Big 8) leads the Big 8 Conference with a .370 batting average.
Modesto (14-10, 3-3 Big 8) went ahead for good when it scored three in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead, and made it 6-2 with two in the eighth.
Blane Cox hit a two-run double in the sixth and scored on one of two errors in the inning when Dwight Nixon hit the ball to right field. Nixon had three hits, two steals and scored twice.
Modesto pitcher Michael Parker gave up one run in the ninth, but got out of the inning stranding runners on first and second for the save.
FRESNO CITY 7, MERCED 1, at Merced -- Five Rams pitchers combined to limit the Blue Devils in a battle for control of the Central Valley Conference. Fresno (24-7, 10-1 CVC) got homers from Mitch Karraker and Romeo Newman. Merced (23-5, 9-2 CVC) got doubles from Wes Borba and Kory Vitato. Ben Gorang had two hits. Starting pitcher Bradin Hagens (3-1) was tagged with his first loss.
Atwater-Winton Lions Tourney
ATWATER 5, CENTRAL CATHOLIC 1 -- In the third-place game, the Falcons (6-12) did all their damage in the sixth inning.
Trailing 1-0, Chase Heckman and Daniel Janz drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. By the end of the inning, Ian Gurden, Colton Beatty, Brock Pisacco and Lance Button had driven in runs to put Atwater ahead 5-1.
Beatty, who came on in relief in the top of the sixth and pitched out of a jam, got the win.
Tracy High beat West High of Tracy 5-1 in Thursday night's championship game.
PATTERSON 6, LIVINGSTON 5 -- The Tigers pushed across three runs in the top of the first and held off the Wolves in the fifth-place game. Chris Chase had three hits for Patterson.
MERCED 17, MOREAU-HAYWARD 0 (5 innings) -- Ty Pedretti hit a grand slam as the Bears (6-9) romped in the seventh-place game. Alex Alvira gave up just two hits and Brian Vasquez had three hits and four RBIs.
Tokay-Lodi Easter Tournament
JOHANSEN 8, EAST UNION 4, at Stockton Ballpark -- Ryan Reddy of the Vikings (5-10) knocked in two runs with a double to left-center in the first, and added a two-run single to left in the fifth. Teddy Anderson homered for East Union.
TOKAY 8, TURLOCK 5 -- Tokay built an 8-0 lead against the Bulldogs (7-8). Sergio Perez had a double and two RBIs for Turlock.
Monterey Peninsula Tournament
BEYER 10, ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON 3 -- Patriots (9-5) leadoff man Joey Roy sparked a four-run first with a walk and steal. Teammate Dillon Usiak tripled, singled and had three RBIs against Stevenson (7-3).
MANTECA 16, CESAR CHAVEZ 0 (5 innings), at Stockton -- Kevin Allen was 3 for 3 with a double and five RBIs as the Buffaloes (5-8-1) trounced the Titans (6-7). Ryan Knisley had three hits. Toby Fox and Tim Larson had a single, double and two RBIs.
MARIPOSA 7, DENAIR 2, at Mariposa -- Denise Buskeness and Neesa Ludington had two goals each to help the Grizzlies (9-5, 3-1) top the Coyotes (4-1, 2-1) in a battle for first place in the Southern League. Buskeness had two assists and Ludington one. Mariposa led 3-0 at the half.
WATERFORD 3, DELHI 1, at Waterford -- Nayely Larios scored both of her goals in the first half to give the Wildcats a 2-1 halftime lead in an SL battle.
SACRAMENTO CITY 6, MODESTO JC 0, at Sacramento -- Amanda Monday of the Panthers (6-1 Big 8) fired a no-hitter against the Pirates (10-19, 2-5).
