Lightning struck the Modesto Junior College baseball team three times Tuesday.
Sacramento City scored four runs in each of the fourth, seventh and ninth innings to overtake the Pirates 12-10 in a Big 8 Conference game.
Modesto led 9-8 going into the top of the ninth inning. The Panthers rapped three consecutive one-out singles to tie the game and scored the game-winner on a Mike Arnold wild pitch.
Two more runs came home on base hits before Michael Parker got Modesto out of the inning. The game was a pitcher's nightmare on both sides. Sacramento (15-11, 3-2 Big 8) totaled 15 hits and left 11 runners on base. Modesto (14-10, 2-3 Big 8) also had 15 hits and stranded 10.
Spencer Arroyo started for Modesto, giving up four runs, one earned, and five hits. He had three strikeouts but walked four, leaving after six complete innings with a 9-4 lead.
The Pirates scored five runs in the bottom of the third, two on Panther throwing errors. Ross Brayton hit a two-run triple and Joey Blakely homered to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead.
Sacramento answered with four in the top of the fourth, but Modesto's offense came through with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
Isaac Duran hit a two-out, two-run double in the fifth. David Jacques hit a two-run single in the sixth to give Modesto a 9-4 cushion. Modesto's final run came in the bottom of the ninth.
The Pirates led with three singles by Sammy Bryant, Blane Cox and David Suarez. David Whiteside drove in Bryant with a single.
Sacramento brought in pitcher Chris Trout, who forced a fly out and a double play to end the game.
Modesto's next home game is Saturday at 1 p.m. against Santa Rosa.
MERCED 9, PORTERVILLE 4, at Porterville — Wes Borba hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to give the Blue Devils a 5-2 lead and some breathing room in a Central Valley Conference game.
Borba also had RBI singles in the third and seventh innings. Brian Gilbertson picked up his eight win of the year, and is 5-0 in the CVC, with nine strikeouts and three hits in eight innings.
Bryan Abrey was 2 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. He scored three runs and Scott Uehara came home twice to lift Merced (22-5, 9-1 CVC).

MJC 9, SACRAMENTO 0, at Sacramento — The Pirates finished second in the Big 8 Conference behind undefeated Fresno City with a sweep of the Panthers. Top singles player Brian Phommachit defeated Anton Sudradjat 6-6, 6-0 and teamed with Nathaniel Sousa to beat Carlsen and Jackson 6-4, 6-4.
Sousa beat Carlsen 6-3, 6-3 in their singles match. The Pirates (5-3, 4-2 Big 7) will warm up for the Big 7 Conference Tournament — April 10-14 at Fresno City — with a nonconference match at Yuba on April 1.
