High school roundup: Escalon, Ripon Christian to play for title

NEWMAN — Mariposa High pitcher Cody Guenthart had the game of the day in the Orestimba Tournament, but it will be Ripon Christian and Escalon in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. today.

Guenthart pitched a no-hitter in a 14-0 victory over host Orestimba, but the Grizzlies also lost to Ripon Christian 2-1 when the Knights scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Escalon earned its spot in the final with a 16-0 victory over Delhi.

Guenthart escaped a jam in the fourth with one of his six strikeouts.

ESCALON 16, DELHI 0 — Jon Whitesitt pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine as the Cougars (9-4) advanced to the championship game. Escalon's 1-9 batters scored in a nine-run second.

Denair Tournament

GUSTINE 5, RIVERBANK 0 — There was a three-way tie for first in the tournament, and the Redskins (7-4) won the tiebreaker based on fewest runs allowed. Justin Zalinski's two-run single widened Gustine's lead over the Bruins (1-10) in the bottom of the fifth.

TURLOCK CHRISTIAN 18, DENAIR 3 — Eli Davis led off the game with a home run, then had a three-run inside-the-park homer in the second. The Eagles (8-3) scored six runs in each inning. Davis is hitting .571 with five home runs.

Tokay-Lodi Tournament

ARMIJO 18, EAST UNION 13 — Dipping deep into their pitching staff, the Lancers (5-3) allowed 16 hits against the Redskins (6-5).


WATERFORD 3, LIVINGSTON 1 — Catcher Savanna Miller tripled and scored in the top of the first, had a run-scoring double in the second and picked off a runner at second in the sixth to help the Wildcats (5-4) beat the Wolves (2-9) in the championship game of the Denair Tournament.

DELHI 2, MARIPOSA 1, at Delhi — Keteria Lara drove in both runs in the fourth to lead the Hawks (3-1, 1-1 SL) over the Grizzlies (2-8, 1-1).


MARIPOSA 3, DELHI 1, at Delhi — Denise Buskeness scored all three goals for the Grizzlies (2-1 SL), and Carrie McNally made eight saves against the Hawks (0-2-1).
