Cal State Stanislaus junior Jessica Gaumnitz was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week for March 17-23. Gaumnitz earned two wins and a save over the weekend at Sonoma State, where the Warriors won a pair of doubleheaders. Both victories were complete-game shutouts, one Friday and one Saturday. She also closed the second game Saturday.
49ers penalized for Briggs tampering
The 49ers forfeited their fifth-round pick in next month's NFL draft after commissioner Roger Goodell said they tampered with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs. In a statement released Monday, Goodell also said the teams will switch picks in the third round of the April 26-27 draft. Chicago, which had the 12th pick, will get San Francisco's seventh pick and the 49ers will get Chicago's choice. "The 49ers organization respects Commissioner Goodell's ruling today, however we do disagree with it," 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said. "This was not a malicious act; we believe that our intent was within the NFL guidelines."
Two know-it-alls in men's NCAA bracket
Who knew Western Kentucky, Villanova and Davidson would reach the round of 16 in the men's NCAA tournament? Only two people from the more than 3.65 million entries in ESPN.com's bracket contest can brag they correctly picked the final 16 teams. That's a huge drop from last year, when 45 of 3.3 million entries accurately predicted the regional semifinal field. Then again, no seed worse than a No. 7 advanced to the round of 16 in 2007.
Giants' Frandsen could miss season
Giants infielder Kevin Frandsen ruptured his left Achilles' tendon in a minor league game Monday and could miss the entire season. Frandsen, who was expected to be a utility infielder and perhaps start at times at second base, injured his leg while rounding second on a base hit after getting aboard on a single. "It's a terrible break for Franny," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It doesn't look good, but we have to wait until tomorrow for the MRI to confirm it."
