MJC wins baseball game in the ninth

Designated hitter David Jacques went 4 for 6 in the Modesto Junior College baseball team's dramatic 7-6 victory over visiting Yuba on Tuesday.

Modesto scored a run in the bottom of the ninth after Yuba tied the game at 6-6 with a three runs in the top of the inning.

MERCED 10, SOLANO 4, at Fairfield -- Three Blue Devils had three hits each, including a home run by Brian Gilbertson, in a victory over the Falcons. Logan Todd earned the win in relief. Wes Borba and Bryan Abrey combined for six hits and four stolen bases.

JC Softball

MJC SWEPT, at Modesto -- Debbie Duran outdueled Rachel Rebelo of MJC (1-4) as San Jose won the opener 1-0 before romping 18-3 in the nightcap.

Duran allowed just one hit and Rebelo five, with the San Jose (2-0) run coming in the third.

Missy Corral and Jessica Merriam each had two of Modesto's six hits in the second game.

JC Women's Tennis

MODESTO 8, DE ANZA 1, at Cupertino -- Quimi Alaniz helped MJC win its season opener with a 6-1, 6-3 win in No. 1 singles and teamed with Christina Yarborough for a win in No. 1 doubles.

College Baseball

W.OREGON 9, STANISLAUS 5, at Turlock -- The Warriors trailed 9-1 in the ninth before scoring four runs in a short-lived comeback to open the season. Warrior ace Marquis Fleming pitched five strong innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits. Jake Oketani and Tom Long each had two hits for Stanislaus, and Kyle Loretelli drove in two runs.
